2017 Macarthur Business Award Finalist
We are extremely excited to be nominated as a finalist in the 2017 Macarthur Business Awards “Excellence in Sustainability” category.
Sustainability is a key goal in every aspect of the farm. We are located in the Wollondilly Shire, where the motto is “Rural Living”. To be successful in rural living environmental sustainability is a must.
One key area that we have focused on over the past 12 months is our Food Production. We feed over 20000 people annually. With all the Beef and lamb is grown on the farm using organic standards, we were looking at ways to reduce the food miles from ‘paddock to plate’. This we have done by working with the local abattoir and butcher. This has resulted in the food miles for each serving to be less than 50km. The average for Australia is 298km (Ceres- Food Miles Study – 2007)
This result encouraged us to look at the food miles of our Milk. We are fortunate – within a 50km round trip from the farm is Country Valley Milk. By purchasing all our milk from them directly, we have beaten the national milk miles by 300km (Ceres Food Miles Study 2007).
And then came Fruit and Vegetables. By using two local suppliers (Pheasant Nest Produce and Cedar Creek orchard) we have altered our menus to work within the seasons, and by default reduce the food miles dramatically.
